In 1958, Arnold Gridley purchased several cable cars from the California Street Cable Car Line. He motorized those cable cars in order to allow them to run on any street. An industry was born. Those cable cars are still in the fleet today.
Together with others, including Henry Schaffer, Mr. Gridley began building cable cars that had the look and feel of those vintage cars.
Instead of using fiberglass to build inexpensive look-alikes, he invested in solid oak and brass. Every vehicle Mr. Gridley built was based on the original cable car blueprints so that it has the look and feel of an original cable car.
Today, there are over 20 cable cars in the Classic Cable Car fleet.
